Photoshop and Your "Creative Vision", Part 3

Here is another image inspiration taken from a popular film. As you may have guessed, I am a film buff, and although the actors and directors get most of the attention, I have a special appreciation for what the director of photography brings to a film. Next time you're at the movies, look closely at the color palette of the film; is it warm or cool, saturated or pastel, contrasty or flat, dark or light...take note of how these all work together to create a stylistic "look", carefully crafted to support the "story" in the same way as a good soundtrack does; we strive to do the same with the "still" image...

In the following example, I was not conscious of where my inspiration came from until well after I was finished working on it...the intuitive creative process at work.
Photographer John Costello supplied us with this interesting image from which we were to create a PPA competition print.

I wanted to bring out the texture, and go with a color palette that would feel dark and mysterious...here's what I came up with...

Working with Photoshop Adjustment Layers, I used curves to control density, contrast, and color balance; selective darkening was achieved with curves on a separate layer mask.

So what movie was the inspiration??? Why not leave a post and make a guess...I'll even throw in a prize to the first one with the right answer...(I've got a leftover holiday fruit cake just waiting :)

So close, but lets go Lord of the Rings?
